The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences

  

The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences started technological academy education since it was founded in 1992. Later on, it started to enroll undergraduate students and graduated students since 1996 and 2001, respectively. Department of Medical Laboratory is made up of five sub-disciplines: clinical biochemistry, clinical immunology, clinical microbiology, clinical hematology, and clinical basic chemistry.

Lu Huixia as the Director of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, is currently holding memberships for several academic associations, ie. the Jiangsu Medical Association Inspection Branch, the Jiangsu Provincial Blood Transfusion Association Clinical Committee, the Jiangsu Medical Association Blood Transfusion Branch, the Jiangsu Provincial Clinical Testing Center. She is also among the editorial list of the Journal of Clinical Laboratory Medicine and the journal of of Jiangsu Blood. Due to her good reputation in the field of medical testing, she has participated in the inspections of clinical and reference laboratories in Jiangsu Province as a specialist.

  

At present, the department is composed of 25 teaching staff, of whicch 44% are senior staff including 4 doctors, 11 masters, and 7 professors. Most of the teachers are taking teaching tasks. They bring rich practical experience into the classroom. Now, the department has opened courses in Clinical Testing Basics, Clinical Blood Transfusion and Testing, Clinical Biochemistry and Testing, Clinical Immunology and Testing, Clinical Hematology and Testing, Clinical Parasitology and Testing.

  

The undergraduate education has continued for 12 years. There are hundreds of graduates joining the medical and related institutes. About 30% of the undergraduates could continue their study as graduate students. As we calculated, 10-15% students are entitled to promotion as recommended students without exam. Of these recommended students, quit a few are enrolled by Fudan, Zhejiang, Jiaotong universities and university of Chinese academy of science.

  

We are focusing  on the existing genetic polymorphisms and coronary heart disease, the research of tumor immunology, the experimental diagnosis of leukemia, the molecular immunology research, the application of gene cloning and recombination technology in clinical diagnosis, etc. The students could receive good practical and scientific training in our department.

  

Department of Clinical Laboratory is carrying out demonstrated teaching has been awarded as the Jiangsu Province Laboratory Construction Management Regulations excellent unit in 2005, and awarded as the Jiangsu Provincial Clinical Laboratory Reference Laboratory in 2006. The department was evaluated as “good performance” in 2009 in the special inspection organized by the healthy department of Jiangsu province. Relying on the advanced equipment, the students will have a deeper perceptual knowledge of the examination profession during the learning process. The training unit for the student internship are all three-level comprehensive hospitals in Nanjing. The school intends to improve the practical ability and innovative ability of the students. After the internship, the students' professional knowledge and skills are significantly improved, and this won the praise by the employers.

  

Over the years, the department has undertaken many educational and research projects and received numerous rewards, ie. 3 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, 8 provincial and ministerial projects (Ministry of Railways, Provincial Science and Technology Commission, and Provincial Health Department), 1 major project guidance fund of Southeast University, a training package for the quality improvement plan of the Ministry of Education, 2 school education reform projects, 1 first prize and 2 second prizes of Jiangsu Provincial Health Department New Technology Introduction Award. In the past three years, we has edited 4 textbooks and participated in the Eleventh Five-Year National Planning Textbook for General Higher Education. Scientific performance is also well conducted in our institute. There are more than 50 SCI publications in the last five years.
