The Department of Bioengineering

Biological engineering, or bioengineering, is the application of principles of biology and the tools of engineering to create usable, tangible, economically viable products. Biological engineering employs knowledge and expertise from a number of pure and applied sciences, such as mass and heat transfer, kinetics, biocatalysts, biomechanics, bioinformatics, separation and purification processes, bioreactor design, surface science, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and polymer science. It is used in the design of medical devices, diagnostic equipment, biocompatible materials, renewable bioenergy, ecological engineering, agricultural engineering, and other areas that improve the living standards of societies. Examples of bioengineering research include bacteria engineered to produce chemicals, new medical imaging technology, portable and rapid disease diagnostic devices, biopharmaceuticals, and tissue- engineered organs.

The Department of Bioengineering was established at 2010, which has a total of 7 faculty members, including 2 professors (2 being PhD supervisors) and 2 associate Professors. It is the training base of life science and technology talents, responsible of cultivating the students majoring biotechnology. The faculty of the department has abundant teaching and research experience in biotechnology, biological separation engineering, biochemical analysis, cell engineering, biological information and data analysis, biopharmaceutical, nature bioactive products, biological materials science, environmental biotechnology, and so on.

The objective of the discipline of bioengineeringis to cultivate students with extensive and solid knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry, to master the basic theory, knowledge and skills of biological science and to have foreign language and computer application skills. The discipline of bioengineering teaches the lessons systematically including the study of basic biology, microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology and biopharmaceutical, bioinformatics.

The labs of faculty members focus on biotechnology and biopharmaceutical.

The major research directions include:

1. Design and Synthesis of new carbon-based nanomaterials.

2. Clinical diagnosis and bioanalysis.

3. Enzyme Directed Evolution and enzyme engineering.

4. Microbial metabolism and natural product research.

5. Environmental toxicology.
